Have you noticed the heavy advertising of black cards recently?

DBS and Citibank have followed UOB's lead by issuing black credit cards in Singapore, and like UOB's, their cards are being aimed at their top-notch clientele.

DBS is targetting what it sees as a growing number of customers who aspire to own a platinum card, but may not currently qualify or be willing to pay the kind of fees often levied for high service levels.

To qualify for the DBS Black Card, applicants will need to have a minimum annual income of S$48,000.

If successful, they get to enjoy many perks including the chance to accumulate frequent flyer miles twice as fast, store discounts and even prime parking lots reserved exclusively for them at selected shopping malls, including Raffles City.

And for the first time in Singapore, a Ferrari sports car is up for grabs as the top prize in a lucky draw.

As for Citibank's black Ultima card, there is no salary clauses attached to it. It is available by invitation only.

And how about the new Manhattan Card? Thought Chase Manhattan is now also into the consumer market, cheah... it's from Standard Chartered Bank.

Stanchart recently showed how customers with good credit could benefit from such shared information by launching this innovative card that charges as little as 10 per cent in annual interest - a huge cut from the standard 24 per cent.

To qualify for the lowest rates, customers must have a history of prompt payments and relatively little debt.

No finishing line for cards chasing...

Didn't go for badminton today, have reports to type and want to rest my sore right elbow. Think I injured it 2 weeks ago.

Tomorrow going for dinner with C and S at Neil Road for some yum cha. Heard from S that it's better than Ding Tai Fung, so we'll have to taste to find out.

Went to celebrate D's birthday with the usual gang at Rice Table. Food is surprisingly quite good, very Indonesian taste... like Sanur. Ambience is not too bad, but the guy behind me kept laughing very loudly. He must be really enjoying the food.

Ended the evening with a cuppa at Olio Dome and chatting about everything from child birth to cars.
