It's that time of the year that many will fly home to be with their family and friends.

For those of us who are not going back, we may be looking at domestic travelling.

Rock bottom ticket prices are what we all want. But what do passengers actually end up paying for their flight after they have bought a few comforts - or necessities - along the way?

Let's use one-way flights from Sydney to Melbourne on a given day as an example.

Jetstar $79

Virgin Blue $115

Qantas $127

On a one-hour flight, Qantas would serve a free snack and drink, so let's add $5.50 (cheese and crackers and a coffee) to the Virgin Blue and Jetstar fares.

However, as Jetstar flies to Avalon Airport in Melbourne, rather than Tullamarine, let's add the difference in the cost of a taxi fare.

Avalon to Tullamarine: $40

After making these adjustments, the cost of the three journeys came within $7 of each other:

Jetstar $124.50

Virgin Blue $120.50

Qantas $127

Virgin Blue seems to be the cheapest way to fly to Melbourne.
